Did you know that up to 20 percent of adults avoid going to the dentist each year? There’s bad news in store for those people – they’re going to need dental care eventually, and the kind they’re going to need will be far more serious than what they could have received had they been seen regularly.

We want all our patients to feel comfortable coming to our Edgewood office and we’re willing to go the extra mile to make sure they feel that way. We want to discuss the top five reasons people avoid the dentist and what we can do to help you get over them!

#1: Too Busy
This is a common reason people don’t see the dentist – they’re too busy to be bothered to make an appointment. This attitude toward dental care is a destructive one, though. Normal dental care only takes about two hours a year, but you could miss a lot more time for a serious procedure.

Cavities, gum disease, and infections are all problems that could lead to expensive and time-consuming restorative procedures and treatments. If you think you’re too busy to see us for two annual cleanings and exams imagine having to take days off of work for treatments and recovery.

#2: Worried About A Lecture
Fear of the dentist comes in more than one form, and a common one is being shamed about not having seen the dentist in a while. You won’t have to worry about that at Edgewood Dental Care – we’ll just be glad to welcome you to our office!

We’re a lecture-free practice and you’ll never have to be worried about being talked down to or being made to feel bad for not getting care. Your continued oral health is what we’re here for – not finger wagging.

#3: It’s Too Expensive
If you don’t have dental insurance you’re probably not even considering getting preventive treatments taken care of – you probably spend more time hoping a disaster doesn’t happen. Without regular preventive dental care it’s almost a guarantee that you’re living dangerously.

We want everyone to have access to regular preventive treatments, which is why we offer a dental savings plan at our office. For one low yearly cost (less than $250) you’ll be able to get two cleanings and exams and 15 percent off any other services you need. It might not seem like a lot, but those two cleanings can be the difference between a future of problems and a healthy smile.

#4: Bad Experiences In The Past
There’s a good chance that we’ve all had a bad experience doing something in the past. Whether it’s riding a rollercoaster, playing sports, going to a concert, or any other activity you might have done it once and said “never again.”

That’s not an option for everything in life, and dental care is one of those things. Good oral health almost universally requires professional care, so we encourage you to never give up on making appointments. You won’t get yelled at, talked down to, treated poorly, or ripped off at our office. We’re here to make your care experience – and the results – the best they can be.

#5: Scared Of Pain
This goes hand-in-hand with #4 – a lot of patients have been hurt by the dentist in the past and simply don’t want to go through that again. We know that fear of the dentist is a problem, and that’s why we offer several different sedation options that are available for anyone who needs them. Whether it’s nitrous to take the edge off of care or IV sedation to let you sleep through a procedure we’re glad to accommodate you!

If the idea of being sedated scares you we understand. That’s why we’re glad to offer plenty of other comfort items as well. The bottom line is that we don’t want anyone to avoid the dentist out of fear of pain. Doing so will only result in more discomfort later on when something goes wrong in your mouth.
