Have you been wracking your brain trying to come up with the perfect Father’s Day gift for Dad? A man only needs so many pairs of socks, right?

This year, give him something different. Something that will make him feel better and could actually improve his health. Let Dad sleep again – give him sleep apnea treatment from Edgewood Dental Care for Father’s Day.

Sleep apnea and snoring treatment with a custom oral appliance will help eliminate the harmful symptoms of sleep apnea, plus it will cut down on or entirely stop his snoring. Now that’s a gift that the whole family can appreciate!
Snoring doesn’t necessarily mean that your father has sleep apnea, although the two often go hand-in-hand. So if you notice Dad (or anyone else for that matter) sawing logs in his sleep, there’s a good possibility that he’s also suffering from sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea is a Serious Sleep Disorder

It’s OK if you don’t know much about sleep apnea. Many people don’t. But it is a condition you should be familiar with if anyone in your family snores or seems unusually sleepy during the day.
Sleep apnea occurs when your airway becomes blocked while sleeping. Although it is normal for the tongue and other soft tissues in the throat to relax and drop down while you sleep, they can drop too far and actually block your airway. When this repeatedly happens, you have obstructive sleep apnea, the most common form of sleep apnea. “Apnea” comes from a Greek word that means “want of breath.”
When the airway is blocked, you’re unable to breathe normally. After a few seconds without breathing, your brain signals your body to wake up and take in more oxygen. After you do so, you drift back off to sleep once more – until the same thing happens again.

This cycle can actually repeat itself hundreds of times per night – 50 or more times per hour in people with severe sleep apnea. And most of the time, sufferers don’t even realize their sleep is being disrupted this much! All they know is that they wake up feeling tired and grumpy.

Sleep Apnea Affects More Than Just Sleep

So you’re thinking, Yeah, I know Dad seems a little sleepy sometimes, and he is often moody. But that’s normal, right? That’s not really hurting anything, is it?
Sleep apnea can cause more problems than just making the sufferer sleepy. Research has shown that left untreated, sleep apnea can significantly contribute to serious health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and depression.
Besides the obvious problems of his falling asleep in his recliner, snoring, and being grouchy, his sleep apnea could already be a factor in these other, more serious, conditions.

A Simple Oral Appliance Can Give Dad Relief

That’s where Edgewood Dental Care comes in. We’re qualified and licensed to treat sleep apnea and snoring with a custom oral appliance made just for Dad (or anyone else suffering from sleep apnea or snoring).
At Dad’s initial consultation, we’ll give him a thorough examination and ask a few questions. If this initial screening indicates that he could be suffering from sleep apnea, we’ll give him a convenient at-home sleep test he can do in the comfort of his own bed.

You’ve probably heard of others having to go to “sleep centers” where they sleep in a strange bed with someone monitoring their sleep. Not so with our sleep test!
After he completes the test, the results will be analyzed and a diagnosis will be made. If it is determined that Dad suffers from sleep apnea we will make a custom-fit appliance that will gently push his lower jaw forward during sleep.
This slight movement is enough to keep the tongue and soft tissues from blocking his airway. The result will be a better night of rest without sleep apnea, plus decreased (or no) snoring. Everyone will be happy!

Some sleep apnea sufferers also require a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for constant positive airway pressure. This device keeps the airway open during sleep by pumping a steady stream of air into the airway. If he needs CPAP therapy in addition to the oral appliance, we can help with that as well.

The best part of all is that Dad (thanks to your Father’s day gift) will be taking positive steps toward improving his overall health, and possibly even his lifespan. He will feel better – and probably look better too, since he’ll be well-rested.

So, if Dad (or anyone else) is snoring, seems excessively tired, or is moody and depressed, talk to us about sleep apnea treatment. Call Edgewood Dental Care at 859-474-7830 today or fill out our convenient online form to request an appointment. Oh, and let Dad sleep in on Father’s Day!
