If you are nervous or even fearful about visiting the dentist, you are not alone. Here at Edgewood Dental Care, we work with patients just like you every day.

The Consequences Of Dental Fear
Avoiding dental care due to fear or anxiety can have serious negative consequences. By avoiding care, you may be allowing gum disease or decay to run rampant. The effect on your smile can be dire … some patients who avoid care out of fear or anxiety actually lose their natural teeth! By maintaining a routine schedule, you avoid lots of painful, expensive experiences and keep your natural smile for life!

What Is IV Sedation?
To help you get the care you need despite your fear, we offer IV sedation. IV sedation is the highest level sedation we offer here at Edgewood Dental Care. It is a medication that has to be administered via an intravenous line by a trained professional. As the drug enters your bloodstream, you will begin to feel very relaxed. IV sedation is designed to relax patients to the point of a sleep-like state. In this state, you will not remember any of the sights, smells, sounds, or sensations of the procedure, but you will still be able to respond to our team.

IV sedation is a wonderful tool for dental patients who are extremely anxious or very fearful about their procedure. We can use it to help them get the dental care they may desperately need. If you are one of these patients, please know that we can help you feel completely comfortable. You do not have to feel stressed or afraid during treatment at all.

IV sedation is also good for patients with bad gag reflexes or who are undergoing more than one procedure in one visit to our office. It is simply a way to provide the ultimate comfort to our patients!

Other Types Of Sedation
While IV sedation is our top tier sedation option, we do offer two other levels of sedation: nitrous oxide sedation and oral conscious sedation. These options can be used for patients who are not quite anxious or fearful enough to need the full deep effect of IV sedation. Let’s talk about them:

Nitrous Oxide — Nitrous oxide sedation is our lowest level of sedation and is designed to simply calm mildly anxious patients. This option is great for nervous kids or adults who just need help taking the edge off. Nitrous (also known as laughing gas) is inhaled via a face mask. It creates a sense of euphoria to help the patient relax.

Oral Conscious Sedation — Oral conscious sedation is our mid-level sedation option (a step down from IV sedation). This option is a medication in pill or tablet form that is ingested prior to the procedure. It creates a grogginess that helps the patient relax. It may even allow you to doze off during the procedure. This option is good for patients who are moderately anxious about their procedure.

Other Comfort Options
In addition to sedation dentistry, we do offer a few other comfort options. We use painless WAND anesthesia (no injections here!) and offer a comfort menu to choose from during your visit.

Preventing Major Dental Problems
By getting the dental care you need with the assistance of IV sedation (or one of our other comfort or sedation options), you can prevent a wide variety of issues. With routine dental checkups, you can avoid major instances of disease and decay. For a healthy smile, regular care is simply necessary. Please talk to our team about setting up a regular checkup schedule. We’d be happy to help you stay comfortable with sedation dentistry.
