Welcome back to another blog from your friends at Edgewood Dental Care. At our Edgewood, KY office, we know that dental emergency happen … and that it is no fun! But, because emergencies are sometimes a fact of life, we need to be able to know what to do if one occurs! Today, we would like to talk to you about how to handle a dental emergency like a pro. We have four easy steps that we would like for you to follow. If you break a tooth, or one gets knocked out, or any other urgent situation that may be causing you discomfort happens, please remember these steps:

Step 1: Stop The Bleeding
The first thing to do when you have experienced a dental emergency is stop the bleeding! If you are not bleeding, great! Skip this step! But if you are, you will want to stop the flow right away. Put pressure on the area with clean gauze. If the bleeding does not stop within about 20 minutes, you should see immediate assistance at an emergency room.

Step 2: Secure Any Loose Fragments Or Replace Teeth
The next thing you should do is try to replace any teeth that have been knocked out. If the tooth is still completely intact and the roots seem unharmed, rinse the tooth (carefully not touching the root) and try to place it back in the socket. This will help give us the best chance possible of saving your natural tooth. If the tooth is broken and cannot be replaced (or the whole thing did not come out), secure the fragments. Collect them, rinse them off, and store them in a cup or baggie of milk or water until you are able to get to our office. We will need the pieces to repair your tooth.

Step 3: Contact Edgewood Dental Care Immediately
Once your situation is stable, you have secured any loose fragments, and the bleeding has stopped, please call our office. Our team will be able to give you additional advice on your situation and will help you schedule an emergency dental appointment. Typically, this means working with you to be seen by a dentist the very same or next day, depending on your situation. We will do our best to help you get the care you need right away!

Step 4: Get To The Emergency Room If Necessary
The “last” step of this guide to dental emergencies can actually be performed at any point during your situation when you feel it is necessary. If your situation is a matter of life or death, PLEASE do not hesitate to get to an emergency room. If at any point you need IMMEDIATE assistance, seek help. Call an ambulance if necessary. Do not wait to see a dentist if your life is at stake!
