Dentures Have a Proven Track Record

Did you know that dentures have been around for thousands of years? Various civilizations have been constructing them out of wood, animal and human teeth, ivory, and metal since as early as the 7th century BC. Some of these dentures may have been luxurious — crafted out of gold, porcelain, and other costly materials — but you should probably be glad you are living in the era of modern dentures. Today’s dentures are designed to be comfortable to wear, durable, and natural looking.

Dentures have come a long way not only from early history, but even from your parents’ and grandparents’ time. They have never felt, looked, or functioned better — that is, more like natural teeth. Call 859-474-7830 to discuss your options.

Traditional (Full) Dentures

In order to be fitted for a set of full removable dentures, any remaining teeth must be removed from your mouth. (Which we can do virtually painlessly with our WAND anesthesia system and/or sedation.) After your gums have healed in a few weeks, digital X-rays and impressions of your mouth will be made. Your dentures will be custom constructed at a lab. Back at our office, we will adjust the dentures so they are comfortable in your mouth. You may return to Edgewood Dental Care for re-adjustments as needed.

Partial Removable Dentures

Partial dentures are a good option if you are missing a few teeth. Lifelike replacement teeth are set into a gum-colored base. They denture stays in your mouth with a metal frame that attaches to your teeth. The process for getting your partial removable dentures is much like the process for traditional full dentures.

Partial dentures may also be attached to your teeth with bridges. This makes them more stable, but they are not removable by you.

Hybrid Dentures

You’ve heard about the wonders of dental implants, but, alas, you lack the bone density for implant-retained dentures. Hybrid dentures are an excellent compromise, offering you the stability and benefits of implant-retained dentures. Hybrid, or fixed-detachable, dentures are secured in the mouth by a few dental implants. But they are removable by the dentist.

Implant-Retained Dentures

If you are missing teeth in your lower jaw, implant-retained dentures are the most secure denture solution available. First, dental implants are placed into the jaw. The dentures, which will not be removable, are secured to the dental implants with either a ball- or bar-type attachment. You will be able to eat normally and clean your teeth normally. You won’t have to worry about your dentures sliding around, slipping out (embarrassing!) and won’t have to deal with messy denture adhesives.

Removable Dentures with Dental Implants

Removable implant-retained dentures are another hybrid option. Two to four dental implants are placed in the jaw. These are used to support a fully removable top or bottom denture. Your denture is secure and less prone to slipping and falling out thanks to the dental implants. But you remove it for care and cleaning, just like with a traditional denture.

It’s time to replace those missing teeth. Dentures will not only enable you to chew better, speak more clearly, and smile with confidence. They provide support for your facial structure, preventing the area around the missing teeth from collapsing and getting that telltale sunken look.

At Edgewood Dental Care, we will examine your mouth, discuss all of your concerns, and come up with a plan to restore your smile beautifully. Whether you want to replace a few teeth with a partial removable denture, seek the stability offered by implant-retained dentures, or like one of our hybrid options, we promise your dentures will fit right, be comfortable, and look amazing. Call our Edgewood, KY office at 859-474-7830 to get the process started.
