You’re not scared of the dentist, so why should you care about all the sedation options we have available at Edgewood Dental Care? It’s a common thing for our patients to react that way to hearing about sedation, but in reality there’s a lot of benefit to it for more than just the dentophobe!

We’ve provided sedation for a lot of patients for a variety of reasons, and each of them was glad to be able to take advantage of it. A lot of patients opt for sedation, just like they would for any medical procedure: you don’t have to be frightened of doctors to benefit from sleeping through a procedure!

Sedation For Busy People
There are some dental procedures that take a while – even a couple of appointments. The last thing you need to take time out of your busy schedule for is multiple dental appointments. Vacation and sick days are only so great in number, children can’t watch themselves, and there are a whole bunch of things you’d rather be doing!

The reason that a lot of the more complicated dental procedures take multiple sessions isn’t because there’s a medical reason – for the most part we’re just concerned about your sanity. There’s only so much a patient can take before they can’t handle anymore fingers in their mouths!

If you can sympathize with that kind of problem then sedation is a great option for you. We offer IV sedation that’s just like the “twilight” sedation used in outpatient medical procedures: it will leave you in a state between sleep and awake that you’ll simply wake up from after your procedure is over! Talk about cutting out a lot of hassle!

The Scared Patient: We Didn’t Forget About You
Nervous patients can benefit a lot from our multiple levels of sedation. IV sedation is great for busy people and longer appointments, but if you are having a quick procedure or a routine checkup it might be a little overboard. For people like you we offer two other forms of sedation as well: nitrous oxide and oral sedation.

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a great way to take the edge off dentistry. You’ll still be completely alert during your procedure, but you’ll be relaxed and content from start to finish. Nitrous is great because of how fast it wears off afterward too – you’ll be up and alert almost instantly!

We also offer oral sedation, which is a great option for those with a bit more fear or who are looking at longer procedures. Oral sedation is prescribed as a pill that you’ll take before you come in to see us. By the time you’re sitting down in the chair you’ll be feeling relaxed and at ease!
Oral sedation is also great because of its amnesic effects. You’ll be awake for your procedure but you won’t remember anything after it’s over – a great relief for patients who simply don’t want to deal with remembering a dental procedure!

Patients With Special Needs
If you are caring for someone who might not understand their dental care needs it can be stressful to bring them to our office for care. Everyone deserves regular dental visits, and a problem understanding an appointment shouldn’t be a reason not to provide it. For those patients we’re happy to provide sedation.

It doesn’t matter the age or needs of a patient with special considerations – we’ll make sure that they’re relaxed, comfortable, and able to cope with their dental visit. Sometimes sedation is a great way to make sure the patient isn’t harmful to themselves or others, so don’t hesitate to consider it as an option!
