Different Types of Dental Emergencies
There are several common dental emergencies that our Edgewood, KY dentists can treat. For each case, we’ll examine your mouth, ask about your pain, and come up with a plan to resolve the situation and relieve your pain. We’ll keep you informed throughout your entire visit so that you can make the decisions you feel will help you best.
Broken or cracked teeth: Broken and cracked teeth can cause pain or may not be painful at all. Regardless, we encourage you to come in as soon as possible because you may crack the tooth more, which may require an extraction. If you can’t come in immediately, make sure you do not put pressure on your tooth, and eat soft foods or liquids until you make it to our office. We’ll do an exam and take X-rays to help us determine whether bonding or a root canal and same-day crown is the solution for your tooth.
Bleeding and swollen gums: Bleeding, tender, and swollen gums are almost a sure sign of gum disease.
Toothache and tooth pain: A toothache can be caused by a tooth infection, deep cavity, or abscess. We will determine the best way to relieve your pain and get rid of the infection. This may include a painless root canal or extraction. We will also provide you with ways to prevent toothaches in the future. If you cannot make it here right away, an over-the-counter pain reliever can help reduce the inflammation in the meantime, and a cold compress can reduce the swelling. (Do not take aspirin; it can encourage bleeding.)
It’s possible your wisdom teeth can be contributing to your pain, too.
Knocked-out tooth: This is an unfortunate injury that happens a lot during sports, especially if you are not wearing protective headgear or a sports mouthguard. It can also happen to children while they play or at work if you have a job in construction, for example. If you get your tooth knocked out, make sure you keep the tooth because it is possible for us to place it back in the socket. Put it in milk or keep it in your mouth if you will be arriving soon; this helps protect the tissue. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever to reduce pain and swelling. A cold compress can also help.
If we are unable to put your tooth back in, we may suggest some restoration options such as dental crowns or dental implants.
Broken dentures: If your dentures break, bring the pieces to us so that we can have them fixed at a lab as soon as possible.
