With Halloween on the horizon, bags, buckets, and bowls filled with candy aren’t far behind.

We know this is why Halloween is kids’ (and many adults’) favorite holiday. We also know that too much candy can lead to tooth decay.

Knowing this, our Edgewood, KY dental professionals want to discuss some ways that you can enjoy some treats without playing a trick on your oral health.

1. Give Away Some Candy

There is a decent chance that you will have more candy than you should or even want to eat when you get home from your candy collecting. Knowing this, make a plan ahead of time to donate some of your candy. Just do an internet search for “places to donate candy” and pick one that you and your kids like.

2. Eat Sweets After a Meal

After you have eaten a meal, you will be less tempted to overindulge in candy. (Even so, it’s a good idea to set a limit on how much you and your kids can eat in a single sitting.) Plus, by the time you get to dessert, your mouth is already producing a good amount of saliva, which helps to remove sugary particles from your mouth.

3. Drink Some Water

While saliva does its job pretty well, having a cup of water also helps. Taking drinks while you eat candy also helps to rinse away candy residue. The water also helps you to feel fuller, which again makes it easier to avoid overdoing it.

4. Be Sure to Brush & Floss

Yes, you should be doing this every day anyway, but brushing and flossing is particularly important when you need to remove candy particles from your teeth and between your teeth and gums. That’s why you need to brush and floss daily.

As a bonus, remember to keep up with your regular dental visits. Don’t let tooth decay rob you of your smile or your enjoyment of future Halloween celebrations!
