Dr. Taryn Wilson:
If a person has gum disease, we will usually do a scaling and root planing treatment. That helps them get some of the tartar and buildup off of their teeth, which can help calm their gums down, prevent the bleeding with brushing and flossing, and that sort of thing, and some of the pain that goes along with that.
During a deep cleaning or scaling and root planing, we get the whole mouth numb. The patient really shouldn't feel anything after they're numb. We also offer nitrous sedation, which is just a very simple kind of sedation that can keep the patient more relaxed.
To keep your smile healthy and attractive, you must take care of your gums, too. Many people don’t know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. It’s one of the main reasons we offer advanced gum disease treatment for our patients in and around Edgewood, KY.
With proper periodontal care, you can:
- Get rid of bad breath
- Reduce your risk of heart disease or other health concerns
- Save your teeth
- Improve your smile
Health officials have known for years that unhealthy gums can also hurt your overall health. If you suspect you might be in the early stages of gum disease, please call 859-474-7830 now. Schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Edgewood Dental Care.
Don’t Settle for Standard Periodontal Treatment
Dr. Kevin R. M.:
At Edgewood Dental Care, we also do a procedure for gum disease called LANAP, which is laser-assisted new attachment procedure, which is a way that you can have gum surgery without a scalpel. It's very comfortable, it does very well, and people tend to really improve as far as their overall health with it also.
It's faster, number one. It's less painful, big-time less painful, number two. A little bit more affordable as far as that's concerned. There's a healing phase, but it's all done without a scalpel or stitches.
- Scaling and Root Planing – This deep cleaning procedure removes plaque and tartar from the roots of your teeth and smooths the surfaces to help your mouth heal.
- LANAP Treatment – Using a diode laser, we can gently remove infected tissue from your mouth. This is less invasive and allows you to heal faster than gum surgery. The laser helps us target the infection and preserve more of your healthy tissue.
- Antibiotics and Probiotics – Antibiotics such as Arestin® and probiotics can be used in combination to prevent your infection from coming back. Antibiotics help eliminate the bacteria that caused your disease, while probiotics can keep healthy bacteria alive.
Take Steps to Keep Your Gums Healthy
Periodontal problems have been linked to a higher risk of other health issues, including cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Gum disease can complicate the harmful effects of diabetes, and women with infected gums may be more likely to give birth to low birthweight babies. We aren’t sharing this to scare you. We just want you to understand that your oral health affects more than just your mouth.
Act Fast If You Have These Signs of Gum Disease
Red and swollen gums, bleeding gums, and chronic bad breath are symptoms of early periodontal disease. In the advanced stages, you may have receding gums and loose teeth. Your gums may (or may not) feel sore as well. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Seek help at the first signs of a problem.
