Let’s get something straight: dental anxiety is a very real condition that does a lot of harm to a lot of good people living right here in Northern Kentucky. But you don’t have to let your fears get the better of you. All you have to do is find a gentle dentist that you can trust to go easy on you as you get back on the good road in terms of oral health.

Today, we are going to talk about why you should let Dr. McMahon address your fears with sedation dentistry. Keep reading, and then be sure to follow up with our team to schedule your next appointment at Edgewood Dental Care.

Teeth Cleanings & Regular Checkups Are Key
It is no secret that many folks who grew up in an earlier era of dentistry were subjected to harsh treatments and less than welcoming dental offices. They may not have had the individualized care that they needed, or their concerns may not have been adequately addressed. Maybe you can relate. But whatever folks had to deal with in the past, our team is committed to making every patient’s experiences better moving forward.

Dr. McMahon will tell you that it is never in your best interest to avoid the cleanings that keep tooth decay and gum disease at bay or to skip the oral exams that tell us if anything is amiss in your mouth. So, if you need some help to be able to get through these sessions, that is never a problem. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to stay on track. Depending on the severity of your situation, we can set you up with sedation in one of three forms:

Nitrous Oxide
In our office we offer three levels of sedation. The minimal or lowest level is nitrous oxide which is laughing gas and a lot of patients have heard of that and it helps take the edge off people with some slight anxiety. They are still awake and aware of what is going on but they don’t quite care as much and for a lot of people, that is an adequate amount.

Oral Sedation
Our second option is oral sedation which is taking some medication 30 to 60 minutes before the appointment and with that, once again it is enough for a lot of people but it is a one time dose and different people react to medications differently so certainly people we have been working on for years, we know what works for them and they are happy with that.

IV Sedation
The third level is with IV sedation where we can give the sedation medications throughout the entirety of the procedure so we can guarantee the patient is comfortable throughout the duration and that is sometimes what some people need either from just being in the office or if the procedure is a little bit more traumatic or involved, then we want to make sure the patient is as comfortable as possible. With this, you will soon forget why you were ever afraid of us!
