Not so long ago, fixing crooked or misaligned teeth didn’t come easy. Yes, you could get that straight smile of your dreams. But you’d have to endure years of shiny, non-removable metal braces attached to the fronts of your teeth. Years of not being able to eat what you want. Years of a difficult and time-consuming oral hygiene routine. Years of your orthodontic work being on display every time you smile. It’s no wonder that so many adults chose to live with their flawed grins.

How times have changed. Today, adults make up a significant (and ever-growing) percentage of the orthodontic patient population. With the short-term invisible and nearly invisible alternatives to braces now available, it’s practically a no-brainer. You can get the beautiful teeth you’ve always wanted, quickly and discreetly. There’s really no downside.
At Edgewood Dental Care, we have several orthodontic options that will appeal to adults. To schedule a consultation with Dr. McMahon, Dr. Peak, or Dr. Middendorf, call 859-474-7830.

Straighter Teeth Are Healthier Teeth

Straightening your smile is an excellent way to improve your appearance and boost confidence. But it is also a health issue. Crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth can be difficult to clean, leaving you vulnerable to gum disease, tooth decay, and other problems. They can make it difficult to speak clearly or chew your food thoroughly. A bite that’s not right can cause damaging wear on the teeth and even lead to jaw and tmj pain.

Clear Ceramic Braces

Clear ceramic braces work much like traditional metal braces. They have brackets that attach to the front of the teeth and wires that move your teeth into position. However, unlike highly visible metal braces, ceramic braces use transparent brackets and wires that aren’t noticeable in your mouth.
Ceramic braces are a great option if you want subtlety but have severe orthodontic issues that clear aligners like Invisalign may not be effective for. They use less pressure than conventional metal braces, meaning they may take a little longer to work, but they are also more gentle and comfortable to wear.

Our clear ceramic braces are stain-resistant, but it’s a good idea to avoid certain foods to ensure they remain transparent and invisible on the teeth.

Fastbraces

True to its name, Fastbraces is an orthodontic system that straightens teeth quickly, usually in about a year (though treatment time varies from patient to patient). Fastbraces uses a distinctive triangular brackets and specially designed wires that move the roots and crowns of the teeth together — unlike traditional braces, which move the teeth in two stages. This shortens treatment time significantly. Fastbraces use lower force than conventional braces, making treatment less uncomfortable. They are also less expensive.

Invisalign

The Invisalign system of clear aligners has become hugely popular with adults and teenagers. And no wonder. This revolutionary product does away with wires and brackets altogether, moving your teeth into position with a procession of custom-made clear “aligners,” which are like very thin, clear mouthguards. Your aligners will be precisely crafted using impressions of your mouth, and you will switch them out every couple weeks or as directed by Dr. McMahon, Dr. Peak, or Dr. Middendorf. Invisalign is an appealing alternative to metal braces for a number of reasons.

  • Invisalign aligners are totally removable for eating and cleaning. Nothing is attached permanently to your teeth. You can eat whatever you want and brush and floss just like you always have.
  • While Invisalign aligners should be worn 22 hours per day, they can be removed for very special occasions. But even while they are on your teeth they are practically invisible.
  • No metal brackets or wires to poke the inside of your mouth, just smooth plastic. Invisalign aligners are more comfortable than conventional braces. They also don’t require tightening.
  • While treatment duration depends on the patient’s particular orthodontic issues, Invisalign generally works more quickly than conventional braces.
